Here is a lovely little film I shot with Robert Hollingworth last Christmas in Covent Garden. We tested the new D7000 out and shot the film in a few hours on a 60mm macro, D7000 with a radio mic straight into camera. It was such an honour to be able to talk to people about such an intimate subject and we were hugely grateful to everyone who opened up to us so freely.

Just finished filming some comedy virals that will be released as part of a national campaign for FDF – the trade body representing some of the UK’s largest food manufacturers such as Pepsi, Nestle and Unilever. I wrote and directed the virals for digital agency, Glow Labs and shot them with DP Robert Hollingworth on the new Sony F3 camera. It’s the first time I’d shot using the camera on a drama shoot and was hugely impressed by its performance in stylised, low light conditions. The sensitivity of the camera meant that we were able to achieve quite subtle effects with a relatively small lighting setup, often using practical lamps alone to supply much of the back light for a scene.

Had great fun a couple of weeks ago directing a short film for the British Olympic Association promoting the next generation pf young athletes who will take Team GB beyond the 2012 London Olympics. Working with cameraman Robert Hollingworth, we used the Sony F3 and Glidetrack to capture some fantastic slow motion footage of the future Olympians in training in a range of locations around London.
Just spent a very enjoyable week filming for a BFI documentary on Ken Loach that I’m directing ahead of his retrospective at the BFI Southbank later this year. We were lucky enough to film with both Ken himself and many of his most important collaborators over the years – from Tony Garnett, the producer of his early television plays, to Martin Compston, who was nominated for best actor at the Cannes Film Festival for his acclaimed performance in ‘Sweet Sixteen‘.

I completed preliminary filming last week for a documentary with BBC Radio DJ, Johnnie Walker. Having begun the shoot in the sunny Cotswolds, we were slightly less blessed on our last day with rather drizzly skies on Primrose Hill in London. Still, cameraman Robert Hollingworth certainly made the best of it, capturing some moody shots against the slowly blackening skies…
The short film, ‘The Stranger’, that I recently wrote and directed in collaboration with the Prison Service has won the IVCA Bronze Award for Best Drama at the 2011 IVCA Awards.
Since many ex-offenders have never had a bank account, have no credit or employment history and still less any friends or family who they can fall back on, trying to build a normal life after a period inside can be almost impossible. This film uses a darkly comic style to demonstrate some of the key pitfalls faced by ex-offenders in their first few weeks after release. I wrote the script following a research period spent visting inmates at Wandsworth Prison, where I learnt first hand of some of the major problems facing prisoners on their release.
I have recently completed production on a spec advert, ‘Quit’, made for the 2011 film competition run by the job agency, Reed. The film has a darkly comic tone and dramatises the fallout from three, separate acts of ‘workplace revenge’ taken by disgruntled employees who have left it ‘one Monday too late’ to leave their old jobs. The film stars Jenny Evans and Tom Bonington and features an original score by award-winning film and commercials composer, Tom Marsh.

The film stars Angus Brown and Joe Sims, who recently starred in the Young Vic’s critically acclaimed two-hander, As We Forgive Them. We filmed on location at HMP Downview and on the old set of The Bill at Merton Studios.
The film was selected for the award by a jury including Oscar-winner Kevin MacDonald (State of Play, The Last King of Scotland) and Sheffield Doc Fest director, Heather Croall. Competition judges said of The Scanner:
“An enlightening film…within the constraints of three minutes the filmmaker has introduced us to a technology very few of us know about and an illness very few understand.”
